Being in the autistic spectrum can set you apart from others in that you experience the world differently than most. While this can be diagnosed as a disorder, I feel that it’s simply a matter of being different but in a neurological sense of the term.
People like me will find some comfort in repetition and create a kind of mental distance between us and the world. This distance is not so much a choice but rather the mechanics that are applied when we need to think.
While I do pick up on some social queues, this came with much effort and a desire to understand people. Some social queues do get missed but I’ve learned to at least appear socially “normal” for the most part. For better or worse, I am who and what I am.
